5 stars (Extremely valuable) - My accidental encounter with an earlier edition of this book was the catalyst for my taking up film studies. The book is a clear, well written and systematically organized history of movies. It has a comprehensive and up to date bibliography and filmography. Chapters are chronological in sequence, but are organized around a particular theme. The authors introduce major influences in the cinema (whether directors, 'schools', actors or events), identify principal directors and films, and analyse major issues and advances. It is an excellent introduction to the history of movies and great jumping off point for further, more specialised study. It is refreshingly free from post-modernist jargon and abstractions. If you want a comprehensive introduction which is also a good read, I recommend this book most highly. 5 stars (Extremely valuable) - My accidental encounter with an earlier edition of this book was the catalyst for my taking up film studies. There are no summaries of the main points and this book should NEVER be used as a college core classroom book... 5 stars (Not All USB Ports Are Created Equal.) - I purchased this Firefly remote a month ago to work with my PC-PVR (I have got a Hauppauge PVR-250 card and BeyondTV 3). As my computer and TV set are in different rooms, I thought it would be convenient to have an RF remote control so that I can still control video recording/playback while sitting in front of my TV. RF signals can usually travel a longer distance, and most importantly, they can penetrate walls. However, my first installation with the Firefly remote was not a totally success. It functioned well, but I have only measured a 6-foot of workable distance - with full battery power, and no blocking objects or interference sources nearby. I thought either I had a defective item, or the product was not as good as they said. I contacted Snapstream for support, and they suggested to try a different USB port or use a powered USB hub for plugging receiver. My computer has 6 USB ports - 4 in back and 2 in front, all built on the motherboard. I was using a front USB for the measurement. After I switched to an USB port in back, everything becomes perfect. I have learned that even all being built on the same motherboard, USB ports can be different, which may provide different power levels for external devices. Now my Firefly works great for my application, which is about 13 feet of transmission distance and with a wall (and some blocking objects as well) inbetween. Firefly remote can even perform the job of a mouse. Although it may not be as fast and convenient as a real mouse, it comes in handy for quick-and-easy controls. For the convenience the Firefly remote brings, I give it 5 stars! 4 stars (incredible) - Works great and fit's like a charm. worked through walls and a floor! amazing product!! 5 stars (I love this remote!) - This is one of the best things I have bought for my computer! It works great, it's completely customizable, and allows me to get the full potential of my computer! ... 4 stars (I like it... But it's not perfect.) - First let me say that before I purchased MEP (I have version 10), I did a lot of research on available editing software. I must have read hundreds of reviews, several for each available brand. I also downloaded trial versions and edited some of my movies with them for comparison. And after all of that, I ended up buying MEP. I chose MEP because of the price and the excellent feature list. However I must admit, I was somewhat apprehensive about my decision because of the reviews I'd read. One of the major research sources I used was PC Magazine's online reviews. PC Magazine has reviews for just about every video editing software package on the market and is a good place to find information on video editing software. The PC Magazine editor had given Move Edit Pro a mediocre rating of 3 out of 5. The magazine commended MEP on its range of features but complained about the user interface and support. However, the article also included MEP user's responses to the article and most of the users seemed to absolutely love the software. As I read more and more reviews, I began to see a pattern. Users who seemed to be looking for a simple tape to DVD transfer package were mostly dissatisfied with MEP and the users on the other end of the spectrum, those that wanted a powerful editing utility, love the program. So you end up with the old, "you either love it or hate it" adage about this software; there's not much room for anything in the middle. I've had the software for a week now and I have to say that I love it. Unlike some of the downer reviews, I've had no problems with the interface; on the other hand, everyone seems to agree that support sucks, I've looked at the support website and I have to concur. I think the interface could be a lot better too. If Magix had adopted a more Windows standard interface, I believe they would have fewer complaints but even so, the interface is not hard to use and I can't reall... 4 stars (Excellent Product - once you get it installed!) - Although it seemed to install OK, I couldn't get it to record for my life. I uninstalled and reinstalled twice. After lots of fooling around with the configuration I finally was able to record! This thing is absolutely great. One of the first things you come to appreciate is the free online TV guide. With the guide I can find my show easily and then tell it to record all new episodes. It then skips old episodes and will even follow the show when it moves from one night to another (i.e. goes from Wednesday night @ 7pm to Thursday @ 8pm). Try that with your VCR! Recordings can take up a ton of disk space - about 2.4 gig per hour. Beyond TV has an option where it will shrink the disk space required after the show completes. You can tell it to do the shrinking during non prime-time so it doesn't interfere with your usual work. Net effect is about 1/4 of the space is needed (.7 gig versus 2.4 gig) and I can't detect any quality difference! 1 stars (beyondtv cant install) - I tried to install this for 2 weeks and can't intall it. The installation wizzard complains that it can't find an internet connection. The tech support could not identify the problem and told me to wait (forever?) until they fine a fix. Apprently, BeyondTV has problems communicating with some ISP's. This is a known problem that Snapstrem didn't disclose. Now I'm stuck with software that will not even install (dell 2.5ghz with 1g memory). My $62 purchase is worthless. The warrenty specifically states that installation problems are not covered. Totally dissatisfied. 5 stars (This product is great) - It is so easy to record your favorate shows. With a product called mpeg-vcr, you can edit commericals out in seconds. Then burn to dvd. Way better than tivo, and no monthly fees! ... 2 stars (videostudio) - This program is bad. It has ok editing features but after i captured something and said stop capturing, the program did not let me capture more but only edit. Don't use this program. Period. 1 stars (bad product) - well i have written several previous reviews, however i believe they were not posted because of my opinions on the creators blood-alchol level when this was dreamed up. However now im trying to make a very calm review. This product is not intuitive at all. Especially if you have previously used Apple iMovie. However there is a much better alternative to this, Power Director 3. I will not take the 30mins to write such a thorough trashing of this product but believe me, don't get this product. 5 stars (You can't beat it for the price) - Does exactly what it's supposed to. Some complain of a steep learning curve - I watched their online tutorials before starting, and it was pretty easy. Captures sharp-looking video from my Sony MiniDV camcorder via IEEE1394. I can edit all my clips together, insert titles, voice-over track, scene transition effects and burn a DVD with menu, all just with mouse clicks. Hasn't crashed yet. My only complaint is that the controls for tweaking the audio levels on the main video track are very fiddly, and the user guide is a bit sparse on exactly how this aspect is supposed to work. ... 2 stars (I demand a remake!) - Quiddich, though only imaginative, is an incredible sport in concept. I was practically compelled to buy the game because of visions I had of the possibilities there, even though the reviews were lackluster. Well, turns out people were right. The passing and shooting is oversimplified, the 3D element is completely absent, and its a little too easy to steal the quaffle (i.e. the ball.) The bludgers and beaters (bat-weilding players hitting heavy balls at enemy players) were handled fairly well. The vying for special moves by accomplishing certain goals in a match is a nice touch, but another reviewer hit a chord when they compared their vision of a Quiddich video game with Madden Football. Let players compete at Hogwarts, Club (Professional), or World Cup difficulty, and let them handle the recruiting and management of a team (or even let players you had at Hogwarts play on your pro club when you move to the next level.) Let the flying be more 3 dimensional, with the chance to play as any position all the time instead of just chasers, and you could have a game that redefines sports gaming. Right now, its just a cheap shot by E.A. Games at all us Quiddich dreamers out there. $10? Yeah, its worth about that much. 2 stars (For the wee ones) - I agree with most of the other reviewers here: This game was clearly designed for younger kids, with the fun, eye-candy set high and any possible frustration kept to a minimum. It's clear that EA Games just adapted a soccer-game engine, trying to minimize the three-dimensional nature of Quidditch. That, combined with the utterly predictable AI system, makes it possible for an adult player to WIPE THE FLOOR with any and all comers. It's aggravating, really: It's not likely that there will be another version of this game made for adults with, say, an AI system worthy of the name. And EA games could have so easily created a workable 3D flying system--just use the usual WASD/three-button mouse ...
